'Natural Science Lab Unit - Numerical Software , Module 1, Spring 2007'
Overview: The Natural Sicence Lab Units in Mathematics and Computational Science will introduce the computer as a tool for the working mathematician, as well as for scientists in many other fields. The Lab Unit Numerical Software introduces Matlab and its free cousin Octave, software packages that allow easy and in many cases efficient implementations of matrix-based "number crunching". The software is ideal for numerical work such as solving differential equations or analyzing large amounts of laboratory data. The computer will be used as a tool in this course so that you will also learn some mathematics alongside learning to use the computer program. This Lab Unit is particularly suited students from both schools interested in experiments, as Matlab is used as a standard tool for analyzing and visualizing data in many of the labs at IUB.

Grading:
Your grade is determined by how many points you obtain out of 1000 possible points. The grade is then assigned according to the table on the right. Points can be collected via Homework (200 pts), Quizzes (200 pts), Midterm Exam (200 pts) and Final (400 pts)

Homework:
Twelve problem sets will be handed out to the students during the semester. Each set is worth 20 points; the sum of your best 10 homework scores will determine your total homework score, i.e., your two worst homework scores are dropped at the end of the semester. The homework is due Fridays, 1:00 pm in the ESM IB mailbox in the lobby of Research I. .
We will not accept any late homework.
We encourage you to discuss homework problems with fellow students. However, the homework you hand in may not be copied and must reflect your own understanding of the material.
Quizzes:
Eight quizzes will be given in class (see schedule), each carrying 40 points. Only the best five quizzes will count towards your quiz score (out of 200).
Quizzes will be approx. 10 minute closed book examinations.
Missed Quizzes and Homeworks:
As mentioned above, some of the grades you achieved on homeworks and quizzes
will not count towards your final score. This is to honor the fact that some
students might have a valid reason (see IUB policies) to miss a homework or a quiz. Please collect excuses for homeworks, but note that they will only become relevant if you have excuses for more than 3 missed quizzes or more than 2 late homework sets. In practice, this implies that NO late homework are accepted and NO makeup quizzes are given!
Exams:
The midterm exam, is worth 200 points and will be administered in
class on Tuesday, October 17th. The final exam,
worth 250 points, will be scheduled for finals week.
The exams are closed book exams. No calculator use is permitted.
